Medical Emergency Fund Page for Spruce

Two-year-old St Bernard, Spruce, was very underweight, limping and in need of love when he came in. Shelter staff were worried how thin he was, and then he stopped eating all together. Spruce needed urgent veterinary care to find out what was going on.

Spruce was hospitalized for several days while his vet team conducted diagnostic tests - this included bloodwork, ultrasounds, urinalysis, radiology and bile acid testing. They also gave him lots of IV fluids. Poor boy had some gastrointestinal issues that needed extra support, so he is now on medication to help him feel better and get his appetite back.

While he was in vet care, Spruce also had x-rays done to find out why he was limping. As it turned out, he has a damaged cruciate ligament, a painful condition similar to a torn ACL in humans. Sweet Spruce will need specialized surgery to stabilize his leg - while this will require more rest and recovery time, it will give him a better quality of life moving forward.

Spruce has been adjusting well and doing much better since starting treatment. He's a social eater and likes to eat his food in the company of shelter staff sitting there with him. He still needs weeks of special care to make sure he gets back to a healthy weight, as well as his surgery to get him back on his paws. Despite his rocky journey, he is the sweetest boy - shelter staff and volunteers have completely fallen in love with him.

Will you help this gentle giant get the specialized care and surgery he needs?

Personal updates for Spruce will be provided to anyone who donates to his care.

*Goal includes: multiple diagnostic tests, x-rays, medications, specialized surgery, aftercare, and vaccines for Spruce until he is ready for adoption. If his medical costs and cost of care are less than is raised in his name, any additional funds will provide care for other animals.
