Medical Emergency Fund Page for Captain & Maria
When Captain & Maria came into the shelter, they were starving, skinny, and nervous of people. It was clear their life so far has not been easy and that the two Akbash dogs had not seen the kindest that humanity has to offer.
We can’t recall seeing a more bonded pair of dogs, they are completely inseparable to the point that they have been dubbed the ‘married couple’ at the branch. One won't walk without the other, if you take one out, you take them both or no one is going anywhere. At almost 150lbs each, there isn’t a lot of negotiating if they decide to ‘put on the breaks’. It looks like they have relied on each other through thick and thin and have formed a powerful friendship that helped them through difficult times.
Captain & Maria were shaken up when they arrived at the shelter but were great patients when it came time for them to be examined. Captain’s left eyelid is partially inverted, which is causing his eyelashes to painfully rub against his eye. He will require an entropion eye surgery to repair it. This big guy also has a sprained cruciate ligament in his back leg, so he is on careful rest to let his leg heal properly.
Maria is in need of extensive oral surgery including extractions. We aren’t sure what kind of diet she could have been on to have a mouth this bad at just two years old. She’s on a delicious soft food diet to help ease her discomfort until her surgery.
Between the two of them, we expect expenses to add up to nearly $3,000.
Shuswap branch volunteer Mark Montemurro has had the good fortune to meet this adorable pair and get them out for walks (together of course). When he found out about their surgeries and about all the animals needing urgent medical help right now, he generously decided to match all donations to medical emergency up to $5000! Ah!
That means your donation will be doubled by Mark if you give right now.
Branch staff & volunteers absolutely love these two. They quickly realized that we were here to help them, and their personalities started to shine through. Combined they are 300lbs, but they are completely unaware of how big they are. They think they are lap dogs and will snuggle up as close as they can get. They have become so affectionate and enjoy lazing around wherever people are, watching staff go about their day.
Captain & Maria have such a tight bond. They insist on being by each other's sides and it’s truly the cutest thing to see. Once they heal from surgery we will be making sure they find a new furever home together.
This sweet pair need your love to get through their treatments before they can finally be pain-free happy dogs.
Will you donate to their care and have your donation doubled?
Personal updates for Captain & Maria will be provided to anyone who donates to his campaign.
*Goal includes: surgery, medication, treatment, regular health check, and daily care for Captain & Maria until they are ready for adoption. If their medical costs and cost of care is less than is raised in their name, additional funds will provide care for other animals.
