Medical Emergency Fund Page for the Woodpecker

Update on the Woodpecker: The woodpecker was successfully released last night. The rehabbers were thinking that she would remain in care another week or so, but due to her improving so quickly and doing so well, they decided it was time. As she is such a high stress bird, they did not want to keep her in care longer than necessary. Our staff contacted the finder who brought the Woodpecker in for care originally. The finder came and picked up the patient and released her back to where she was found. The release went very well.

Original story: An adult Hairy Woodpecker was brought into Wild ARC after she was found lying on the ground below someone’s window. When found, the Woodpecker was fairly unresponsive. The finder thankfully called Wild ARC and brought the patient in for care.

Upon arrival, the Woodpecker was found to have suffered central nervous system damage and also displayed issues with her vision. There was bruising found in her ears and blood coming from her mouth. She was put into a quiet space to rest and placed on oxygen to give her time to stabilize from her mild brain injury. She will need regular monitoring, specialized diets and administering of medications as part of her recovery.

Once she arrived at Wild ARC, we were uncertain this beautiful bird would make it, as head trauma in birds can be difficult to recover from. After a bit of time in care and regular improvements we are now hopeful that this Hairy Woodpecker will fully recover and be released back into the wild where she belongs. She is perching well, flying and acting just like a healthy Woodpecker should.

Will you help us by donating to the care for this beautiful Woodpecker? It is estimated that nearly 1 billion birds die annually due to window-collisions in North America. You can purchase Window Alerts online in our shop!

Personal updates for the Woodpecker will be provided to anyone who donates to her campaign.
