Medical Emergency Fund for Six skinny puppies

These six sweet babies have been through so much. Checkers, Catan, Monopoly, Clue, Scrabble, and Chess came to us in alarmingly poor condition, ribs protruding from their frail bodies.

Caring for a litter of puppies is a big responsibility, and when this unplanned litter arrived, their previous guardian simply couldn’t meet their growing needs. Despite efforts to rehome the pups, their condition worsened — and soon, they were in crisis. When an Animal Protection Officer contacted the owner, they acknowledged they needed help and arranged for these sweet souls to come into care, and now their story has taken a hopeful turn.

Checkers and her two siblings, Chess and Scrabble, were so dangerously weak when they arrived, they had to be rushed to the vet immediately. Their bodies were on the brink of shutting down. To help them recover safely, their dedicated veterinary team created a careful refeeding plan to avoid refeeding syndrome — a potentially fatal condition if emaciated animals are fed too quickly. Despite their tiny frames, their bellies were bloated from internal parasites, and they began medication. Back at the animal centre, Catan, Monopoly, and Clue were also started on a careful refeeding schedule, worm treatment and daily fluids.

Despite their young age, all six puppies have significant oral issues, a troubling result of poor nutrition. Their mouths are full of tartar, and some still have baby teeth. Once they have gained weight and are strong enough for spay/neuter surgeries, their vet team will remove any teeth that are causing them pain

As they begin to gain strength, their true puppy personalities are really starting to shine through. They climb, play, and squeeze through the tiniest spaces, full of mischief and joy, just like puppies should be.
