Medical Emergency Fund for Alex

Alex’s world changed in an instant. When his beloved guardian sadly passed away, the three-year-old shih tzu mix lost the person he trusted most and the home where he felt safe and loved. Suddenly, everything familiar was gone.

Now in BC SPCA care, Alex is trying to navigate a world that feels uncertain, while also coping with painful medical issues that can’t wait. He has been struggling with a long list of health issues. His fur was matted, his nails were overgrown, and sores had developed on his feet, making every step uncomfortable. He also has an uncomfortable eye condition called cherry eye. On top of that, he’s carrying too much weight and struggling with severe anxiety. He was taken straight to the vet for a thorough medical assessment.

His medical team determined that Alex needs multiple procedures to ease his pain and discomfort. Eye surgery to address his cherry eye, oral surgery to address his loose teeth and clean those that remain, and a neuter procedure. To help treat his suspected allergies, he’s been prescribed a special diet and daily medicated foot soaks to help his itchy skin. He’s also been placed on a carefully managed feeding plan to help him safely lose around 15 pounds to reach a healthy weight. In addition to these treatments and surgeries, Alex requires several medications to ease his anxiety, pain relief, eye medication, and a gentle grooming session.

Alex is the most loving and personable dog. He is always happily trotting around or curled up under a desk next to someone’s feet. He is happiest when he is around people, but he doesn’t ask for much. He simply wants to know someone is there. Curled up under the office desk is where he feels his safest.
