Medical Emergency Fund for Shaggy

This extremely matted labradoodle was found running alongside an old highway on his own. He seemed frightened and confused and was in clear need of some love and medical attention.

Shaggy arrived with severely matted fur that was clumped together and saturated with his own waste. Overgrown nails, fleas and infections indicate this boy has suffered for a long time like this. His behaviour suggests he hasn’t spent a lot of time around people, but from the moment he arrived he has leaned into every gentle touch. The first step to ease Shaggy’s pain and allow the team to fully assess his condition was a shave. Shaggy was sedated so that his medical team could carefully remove each clump of tangled fur bit by bit. His caregivers wanted to keep him as comfortable as they could, so they sat on the floor with him as they gently worked their way across his body.

Once the mats were removed, the full picture became clear: inflamed, itchy, flaking skin that was crawling with fleas, a wound under his eye, and chronic infections. His nails were so overgrown they were cracking, making every step difficult. On top of it all, this sweet boy is also underweight. Further examinations have revealed swelling and inflammation around Shaggy’s groin area, a possible urinary tract infection, and a hernia that will require surgery to be repaired. Now freed from the heaviness of his matted coat, Shaggy needs medicated baths to soothe his skin, as well as ear drops and antibiotics to clear up his infections. During his hernia repair procedure, he will also be neutered. An important step in his recovery and future well-being.

Even in his discomfort, Shaggy is nothing but full of love. He’s incredibly affectionate and eager for attention, clearly making up for lost time. He’s still learning basic manners and gets very excited around people, but he’s smart, extremely food-motivated and excited at the chance to learn new things.
