Medical Emergency Fund for Cherry Garcia

At just three days old, Cherry Garcia’s future was uncertain.

Discovered in a kind rescuer’s barn alongside her mother and five tiny siblings, Cherry’s eyes hadn’t even opened yet. Tragically, one kitten didn’t survive, but Cherry and the rest of her little family were rushed to the local BC SPCA, before settling into the safety of an experienced foster home, where they could receive the round-the-clock care they needed. Among her colourful littermates was the tiniest kitten of them all: a little black ball of fluff named Cherry Garcia. It wasn’t long before her foster mom noticed something was wrong. Not only was she much smaller than her siblings, but her breathing was shallow and wheezy, and she wasn’t moving around like the others.

An emergency trip to the animal hospital and chest x-rays revealed the heartbreaking cause: a genetic condition where her ribcage and sternum hadn’t formed properly. Every breath was a struggle for her tiny body. To give her the best chance at a healthy future, Cherry needed a specialized surgery. A custom splint would be placed on her ribs to help gently reshape her ribcage as she grows, giving her lungs the space they need to expand.

Cherry may be the smallest of her litter, but she has the biggest heart. Despite everything she’s been through, this gentle kitten loves nothing more than being cradled in her caregivers’ arms, snuggling in and kneading the air with her tiny paws. She still needs weekly check ins with her medical team, repeat x-rays, cast changes, and eventually a spay surgery once she’s strong enough.
