Medical Emergency Fund for California Myotis Bat
A cruel glue trap set for rodents accidentally caught this unsuspecting California Myotis bat, likely while trying to forage for insects. Stuck and unable to free themselves, this bat was lucky to be found alive.
This feisty little bat was urgently transferred to Wild ARC from our neighbouring Island Wildlife Natural Care Centre located on Salt Spring Island for specialized care. Fortunately, the initial exam found no additional injuries from being removed from the trap, and intensive care could begin. The bat was soiled with glue, thin, dehydrated, and had wing membranes sticking together.
Wildlife rehabilitators have been hand-feeding this tiny patient mealworms several times a day to help rebuild their strength. Once stable enough, the bat will undergo a delicate cleaning process to remove the stubborn glue coating from their wings and body. It may take multiple special baths before they can spread their wings properly again and be ready to fly.
Despite everything they’ve endured, they’re showing remarkable resilience, and their rehabilitators are hopeful they can make a full recovery and return to the wild where they belong. This bat’s story is an important reminder to choose wildlife-friendly rodent control methods.
